How this calculator works
A weighted average multiplies each value by its weight, adds the products and divides by the total weight. Weights can be percentages, credit hours or any positive numbers; they do not need to add up to 100. If every weight is the same, the result equals the ordinary mean.
Formula
- Weighted average = Σ(value × weight) / Σ(weight)
Worked example
Scores 90, 80, 70 weighted 50, 30, 20
- Values
- 90, 80, 70
- Weights
- 50, 30, 20
Result83
Weighted average of 3 values. The unweighted mean is 80.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each score by its weight (for example exam 90 × 50%, homework 80 × 30%, quiz 70 × 20%), add the products and divide by the total weight. Here that is 83.
Do the weights have to add up to 100?
No. The calculator divides by the sum of the weights, so 50, 30, 20 gives the same result as 5, 3, 2.
How is a weighted average different from a normal average?
A normal average treats every value equally. A weighted average lets some values count more than others.
