How this calculator works
Dividing the numerator by the denominator gives the decimal. The expansion ends only when the simplified denominator has no prime factors other than 2 and 5; otherwise a block of digits repeats forever. Repeating digits are shown in parentheses, so 1/6 appears as 0.1(6).
Formula
- Decimal = numerator ÷ denominator
- Percent = decimal × 100
- Lowest terms: divide numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor
Worked example
5/6
- Numerator
- 5
- Denominator
- 6
Result0.8(3)
5/6 as a decimal. Repeating, period 1.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a fraction to a decimal?
Divide the top number by the bottom number. 3/8 is 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375.
Why do some fractions repeat?
After simplifying, a fraction terminates only if its denominator is built from the primes 2 and 5. Any other prime factor, such as 3 or 7, produces a repeating decimal.
What do the parentheses mean?
They mark the repeating block. 0.(142857) means 0.142857142857… and 0.1(6) means 0.1666…
