How this calculator works
The three common averages answer slightly different questions. The mean adds everything and divides by the count, so a few extreme values pull it strongly. The median is the middle value of the sorted list and resists outliers. The mode is the value that occurs most often.
Formula
- Mean = sum of values / number of values
- Median = middle value of the sorted list (or the mean of the two middle values)
- Mode = most frequent value(s)
- Range = maximum − minimum
Worked example
Seven test scores
- Numbers
- 72, 85, 90, 85, 64, 98, 77
ResultMean 81.5714
7 values. Median 85.
Frequently asked questions
When should I use the median instead of the mean?
When the data has outliers or is skewed, such as incomes or house prices. A few very large values raise the mean but barely move the median.
Can a data set have more than one mode?
Yes. If two or more values tie for the highest frequency, all of them are modes. If every value occurs once, there is no mode.
How do I enter the numbers?
Type or paste them separated by commas, spaces or new lines. Do not use commas as thousands separators.
