How this calculator works

Roman numerals build numbers from seven letters. Symbols are normally written from largest to smallest and added together; a smaller symbol placed before a larger one is subtracted, which is how 4 becomes IV and 900 becomes CM. Standard notation has no zero and stops at 3999, because 4000 would need four Ms in a row.

Formula

  • I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000
  • Subtractive pairs: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400, CM = 900
  • Write the largest possible symbol first, then repeat with the remainder

Frequently asked questions

Why is 4 written IV and not IIII?

Standard notation avoids repeating a symbol four times by subtracting instead. IIII does appear on some clock faces by tradition.

What is the largest Roman numeral?

3999, written MMMCMXCIX, in standard notation. Larger numbers historically used a bar over a numeral to multiply it by 1,000.

Is there a Roman numeral for zero?

No. The Roman system has no symbol for zero.
