How this calculator works
Fat carried around the abdomen is linked to a higher risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes than fat carried on the hips and thighs. The waist-to-hip ratio captures that pattern with two tape measurements. The World Health Organization treats a ratio of 0.90 or more in men and 0.85 or more in women as a marker of substantially increased risk.
Formula
- Waist-to-hip ratio = waist circumference / hip circumference
- WHO threshold: 0.90 or more (men), 0.85 or more (women)
Worked example
Woman, waist 76 cm, hip 100 cm
- Sex
- Female
- Waist
- 76
- Hip
- 100
Result0.76
Below the WHO threshold of 0.85 for women.
Things to keep in mind
- Measure the waist midway between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone, and the hips at the widest point of the buttocks.

Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy waist-to-hip ratio?
Below 0.90 for men and below 0.85 for women, according to the World Health Organization.
Is waist-to-hip ratio better than BMI?
They measure different things. BMI reflects overall size; waist-to-hip ratio reflects where fat is stored. Using both gives a fuller picture.
Does it matter which unit I use?
No. The ratio is the same in centimeters or inches as long as both measurements use the same unit.
