How this calculator works

Lean body mass is everything in the body except fat: muscle, bone, organs and water. It is used for dosing some medicines and for setting protein targets. The Boer and Hume equations estimate it from height and weight alone, so they describe an average build and will underestimate very muscular people.

Formula

  • Boer (men): 0.407 × kg + 0.267 × cm − 19.2
  • Boer (women): 0.252 × kg + 0.473 × cm − 48.3
  • Hume (men): 0.32810 × kg + 0.33929 × cm − 29.5336
  • Hume (women): 0.29569 × kg + 0.41813 × cm − 43.2933

Worked example

Man, 80 kg, 180 cm

Sex
Male
Weight
80 kg
Height
180 cm

Result61.4 kg (135.4 lb)

Estimated lean body mass (Boer), about 77% of body weight.

Things to keep in mind

  • Estimates from height and weight cannot see your actual muscle. A DEXA scan or a tape-measure body fat method is more specific.
  • For general information only. It is not medical advice; talk to a health professional about your own situation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between lean body mass and muscle mass?

Lean body mass includes muscle plus bone, organs, skin and body water. Skeletal muscle is only part of it, typically 40-50%.

What is a normal lean body mass percentage?

Roughly 75-85% of body weight for men and 68-80% for women, which corresponds to typical body fat ranges.

How is lean body mass used?

For dosing certain drugs and anesthetics, estimating energy needs, and setting protein intake targets.
