How this calculator works
Ideal body weight formulas were created to calculate drug doses, not to define how anyone should look. They use only height and sex, so they ignore age, frame and muscle. The four formulas here give a spread of values; the healthy BMI range shown alongside is usually the more useful reference.
Formula
- Devine: 50 kg (men) or 45.5 kg (women) + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft
- Robinson: 52 kg + 1.9 kg (men) or 49 kg + 1.7 kg (women) per inch over 5 ft
- Miller: 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg (men) or 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg (women) per inch over 5 ft
- Hamwi: 48 kg + 2.7 kg (men) or 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg (women) per inch over 5 ft
Worked example
Man, 180 cm
- Sex
- Male
- Height
- 180 cm
Result75.0 kg (165.3 lb)
Devine formula for a man of 180 cm. The four formulas range from 71.5 to 77.3 kg.
Things to keep in mind
- The formulas were designed for adults 5 ft (152.4 cm) and taller and become unreliable below that.

Frequently asked questions
Which ideal weight formula is the most accurate?
None is a measure of health. Devine is the most widely used in medicine for dosing. For a personal target, the healthy BMI range of 18.5 to 24.9 is a better guide.
Why do the formulas give different answers?
Each was fitted to different data at a different time. The spread between them shows how rough the concept is.
Do these formulas account for muscle or frame size?
No. They use only height and sex, so a muscular or large-framed person can be healthy well above the result.
