How this calculator works
Torque is a turning force: the force applied multiplied by its distance from the axis. Service manuals give fastener torques in newton-meters or pound-feet, small fasteners in pound-inches, and older Asian and European manuals in kilogram-force meters. Using the wrong unit on a torque wrench is a common cause of stripped threads.
Formula
- 1 lbf·ft = 1.3558 N·m
- 1 lbf·in = 0.11298 N·m
- 1 kgf·m = 9.80665 N·m
- 1 lbf·ft = 12 lbf·in

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert Nm to ft-lb?
Multiply by 0.7376. 100 N·m is about 73.76 lbf·ft.
Is ft-lb the same as lb-ft?
For torque the two are used interchangeably. Strictly, pound-foot is torque and foot-pound is energy, but the numbers are identical.
How many inch-pounds are in a foot-pound?
12. Multiply pound-feet by 12 to get pound-inches.
