How this calculator works
There are two families of storage units. Decimal units (kB, MB, GB) step by 1,000 and are used by drive makers and network speeds. Binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB) step by 1,024 and are what Windows reports while labelling them GB. That mismatch is why a 1 TB drive shows up as about 931 GB.
Formula
- 1 byte = 8 bits
- 1 kB = 1,000 B; 1 MB = 1,000 kB; 1 GB = 1,000 MB
- 1 KiB = 1,024 B; 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB; 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB
Worked example
1 gb to gib
- Value
- 1
- From
- Gigabyte (GB)
- To
- Gibibyte (GiB)
Result0.93132257 GiB
1 GB = 0.93132257 GiB. 1 GB = 0.93132257 GiB.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my 1 TB drive show only 931 GB?
The drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows divides by 1,024 three times and reports 931 (strictly GiB) while labelling it GB.
Is a megabyte 1,000 or 1,024 kilobytes?
By the SI definition 1 MB is 1,000 kB. The 1,024-based unit is properly called a mebibyte (MiB), although many systems still say MB.
What is the difference between Mb and MB?
Lowercase b means bits and uppercase B means bytes. A 100 Mbps connection transfers at most 12.5 MB per second.
