How this calculator works
Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage and say how many people are paying. In the United States, 15-20% of the pre-tax bill is the usual range for table service; customs differ widely elsewhere, and in many countries service is already included.
Formula
- Tip = bill × tip %
- Total = bill + tip
- Per person = total / number of people
Worked example
Bill of 80 with an 18% tip, split 4 ways
- Bill amount
- 80
- Tip
- 18%
- Number of people
- 4
ResultTip 14.40 · Total 94.40
23.60 per person for 4 people.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant in the US?
15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for sit-down service, and more for exceptional service.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
The pre-tax amount is the traditional baseline, though many people tip on the total for simplicity.
Do I need to tip outside the US?
Often not, or much less. In much of Europe a service charge is included and rounding up is enough; in Japan and South Korea tipping is not customary.
