How this calculator works

The usual full-time assumption is 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, or 2,080 hours a year. Divide the salary by the hours you actually work to get a comparable hourly rate, which is useful when weighing a salaried job against hourly or contract work. US federal agencies use a slightly different divisor of 2,087 hours. All figures are gross pay before taxes and deductions.

Formula

  • Hourly rate = annual salary / (hours per week × weeks per year)
  • Weekly pay = annual salary / weeks per year
  • Monthly pay = annual salary / 12

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert salary to hourly?

Divide the annual salary by the hours worked in a year. At 40 hours for 52 weeks that is 2,080 hours, so 60,000 a year is about 28.85 an hour.

How many working hours are in a year?

2,080 for a 40-hour week over 52 weeks. Subtract unpaid time off to get your actual figure.

Is biweekly pay half of monthly pay?

No. There are 26 biweekly periods in a year but only 24 half-months, so a biweekly paycheck is slightly smaller.
