How this calculator works
Enter the original price and the discount percentage to see what you pay and how much you save. Add a sales tax rate to see the final checkout price; tax is applied after the discount, which is how it is normally charged.
Formula
- Savings = original price × discount %
- Sale price = original price − savings
- Price with tax = sale price × (1 + tax %)
Worked example
120 at 25% off with 8% sales tax
- Original price
- 120
- Discount
- 25%
- Sales tax (optional)
- 8
Result97.20
Final price including 8.00% tax. You save 30.00.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate 20% off?
Multiply the price by 0.20 to get the savings, then subtract it from the price. Or multiply the price by 0.80 directly.
Is 50% off plus an extra 20% the same as 70% off?
No. The second discount applies to the already reduced price: 50% then 20% is 60% off in total.
Is sales tax applied before or after the discount?
After, in most places. Store discounts reduce the taxable price. Manufacturer coupons can be treated differently depending on local rules.
