How this calculator works

Pulling a single card at the start of the day is the most common way to use tarot: it sets a theme to reflect on rather than predicting events. Enter a name and the same name gets the same card for that date, so it works as a true card of the day. Leave the name empty and every draw is new. The artwork is Pamela Colman Smith's 1909 illustrations, which are in the public domain.

Formula

  • The deck has 78 cards: 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana in four suits (Wands, Cups, Swords, Pentacles).
  • Cards are shuffled and drawn without repeats. With reversals on, each card has a 50% chance of appearing reversed.
  • With a name entered, the card is chosen from the name and the date, so the result stays the same all day.

Frequently asked questions

How many cards are in a tarot deck?

78. The 22 Major Arcana describe the large themes of life, and the 56 Minor Arcana are divided into four suits: Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles.

Is a reversed card bad?

Not necessarily. A reversal means the card's energy is blocked, weakened or turned inward. For difficult cards such as the Devil or the Tower, reversed can even mean release.

Can I draw more than once a day?

With a name entered you will get the same card all day. Without a name you can draw again, though staying with the first card's message is the usual practice.
