How this calculator works
Fuel used is the distance divided by the car's fuel economy, and the cost is that amount times the price at the pump. Choose US units to work in miles, miles per gallon and price per gallon, or metric to work in kilometers, liters per 100 km and price per liter. Real consumption depends on speed, load, traffic and weather, so allow a margin.
Formula
- US: fuel (gal) = distance (mi) / mpg
- Metric: fuel (L) = distance (km) × L/100 km / 100
- Cost = fuel × price per gallon or liter
- Cost per person = cost / number of people
Worked example
300 miles at 30 mpg and 3.50 per gallon
- Units

Result35.00
10.00 gallons of fuel for 300 miles.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the fuel cost of a trip?
Divide the distance by your car's mpg to get gallons, then multiply by the price per gallon. 300 miles at 30 mpg and 3.50 a gallon costs 35.00.
How can I find my car's real fuel economy?
Fill the tank, reset the trip meter, drive normally, then fill up again. Distance driven divided by the fuel added is your real figure.
Does a round trip double the cost?
Yes. Enter the total distance for both directions.
